Something brought up by Nancy Evans in her Guided Reading workshop was that all members of a Literature Circle could be Discussion Director in that each would come up with questions. This would allow the one usually designated as Discussion Director to take on a second role like everyone else would.

"Ugly Children May Get Parental Short Shrift"
ReplyDeleteDiscussion Director:
1. What is this scale they were using?
2. What's a 1, what's a 10?
3. They talked about making 400 observations of people in supermarkets, but as anyone knows, there's a whole host of things going on in any context, that maybe people were stressed out, maybe they were having a bad day, maybe their kids had been acting out, so the question is how can these researchers know that what they were seeing was completely divorced from any of the contexts I already mentioned? because that would skew the validity of the data…
4. What's the ultimate purpose of the research? are the researchers trying to say that looks trump love, or are they merely stating that looks definitely impact how we treat those around us, including and especially our children?
5. If looks are more important to people than anything else, then what value judgment can be made about people? is this something we can draw a conclusion from…even if it isn't an uplifting one?
"Parents would certainly deny it, but Canadian researchers have made a startling assertion: parents take better care of pretty children than they do ugly ones."- I think this quote is important because it is sure to grab the reader’s attention by making a very controversial statement right off the bat. The idea that parents would treat their children differently in regards to safety based on their appearance is sure to touch on a lot of nerves.
ReplyDelete“Like lots of animals, we tend to parcel out our resources on the basis of value," he said. "Maybe we can't always articulate that, but in fact we do it. There are a lot of things that make a person more valuable, and physical attractiveness may be one of them."- This quote is important because what Dr. Harrell is saying is that parents divide their resources unevenly by giving more resources to the children who are more physically attractive because it is seen as a sign of value.
“Age -- of parent and child -- also played a role. Younger adults were more likely to buckle their children into the seat, and younger children were more often buckled in. Older adults, in contrast, were inclined to let children wander out of sight and more likely to allow them to engage in physically dangerous activities.”- This quote is important because it is giving a good visual of actual negligent activities that parents can relate to. Simple actions like this could actually signal a difference in how ugly children are treated.
